What is a Microboard?
A microboard is not something to do with computers!
A Microboard is formed when a small (micro) group of committed family and friends (board) join with a person with challenges to create a non-profit community board. Together this group of people assist the person to plan and achieve their goals and dreams in an individually tailored way. Microboards operate from a philosophy of person centred thinking. Each Microboard is created for the support and empowerment of one person. The Microboard also helps the community to learn and benefit from the person’s contribution.
Essential Components of a Microboard are:
- The process must be focused on the dreams and wishes of the person for whom the Microboard is being created;
- All Microboard members must be in a close, voluntary, and committed relationship with the person for whom the board is being created;
- These close relationships are the foundation of the Microboard and must be honoured above all other activities.
As a group, the Microboard assists the person to plan, develop and carry out the actions required to enable the person to achieve their goals and dreams for a good life. Each member of the Microboard is involved on a voluntary basis and has a specific focus and commitment to advancing the well being, wishes and dreams of the person around whom the Microboard has formed.
A Microboard may take on a formal role in purchasing and coordinating supports and services for the person but always has a role in building and sustaining that individual’s relationships and connections with family, friends and community.
