How Vela Microboards Australia began

Vela Microboards Australia (VMA) is an association of mainly family representatives, each of whom has a member with a disability.   In 2007, the group attracted funding from the Disability Services Commission to establish a steering committee & employ a project officer to oversee a two year trial of the Microboard model of support in Western Australia with a small number of pioneer families.  The Microboard trial is auspiced by Perth Home Care Services.

The process for supporting the development of individual Microboards has closely mirrored that undertaken by Vela Microboards Association, BC.

Specifically, the group has worked from the following assumptions:

VMA benefits from the experience of individual Microboards and organisations supporting their establishment, from around the world.  VMA also takes into account the uniqueness of the Western Australian cultural & legal context.

The pioneer families are well-placed to lead, assist and challenge each other & new families as they seek to establish individual Microboards.

Whilst all Microboards uphold a consistent set of principles, they are as diverse in their foci and achievements as the people for whom they are established.

The work of VMA is necessarily intensive and small in scale in this beginning period.  The small group of pioneer families is committed to building up a shared understanding of how Microboards get established for their long term effectiveness and sustainability.

Relationships are the basis of Microboards and also the basis of VMA as an organisation which provides support to future individuals & families who wish to establish individual Microboards.
